I’m Lara, freelance fiction and comics editor. With my professional and educational backgrounds in writing, editing, design, art, & theater, I’m uniquely experienced to edit comics, graphic novels, and illustrated works. In 2020, I completed my MFA in writing for children and young adults with a concentration on comics and picture books. More info after the jump.
Since 2009, I have interned for a Marvel Comics editor, have been mentored by comics editors and visual development artists, have learned from three Hollywood story consultants, and have worked with different artists and writers on every developmental stage of visual storytelling.

PICTURE BOOK PRICES
All picture and story book edits include feedback on structure or plot.
- Prose Picture Book: $0.15 per word, with a $40 minimum
- Rhyming Picture Book: $0.35 per word, with a $75 minimum
- Nonfiction Picture book: $0.10 per word, with a $50 minimum
Picture books for young readers are usually under 500-750 words. Story books tend to run longer, up to 1000 words. Nonfiction picture books might run up to 2,000 words for older elementary readers.
COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVEL PRICES
Plot & Structure Help
- Synopsis or Pitch Critiques (for pitches and proposals): $10 per 100 words, starting at $35
- Plot Hole Spotter Story Consultation for complete manuscripts: $1 for each comics page of the whole manuscript, starting at $50. Learn more about what you need to provide me for a Story Consultation (hint: it’s a detailed outline).
- Zoom, Google, WebEx, etc. Story Consultation: $75 for first hour (or $125 for up to 2 hours). One hour does not include reading time. For best results, pair with a critique or Plot Hole Spotter, or book 2-3 hours to include reading time.
Prices include another round of question & response emails for clarity and follow-up. Additional review of a revised synopsis or pitch is $25. Repeat story consultation clients get a 15% discount.
Scriptwriting Help

- Full Script Critique (Big Picture Feedback): 2 credits per page
- Full Script Edit (Word-by-Word Edit): 0.03 credits per word
Artwork Help

- Thumbnail Critiques or Layout Feedback: 0.50 credits per panel or 3 credits per page
- Pencilled Pages Critique: 0.25 credits per panel or 1.50 credits per page
- Inked Pages Proof: 0.25 credits per panel or 1.50 credits per page
Voice & Grammar Help

- Voice Edit (Dialogue & Captions): 0.05 credits per word or 0.25 credits per speech bubble*
- Final Proof: 1 credit per page
*Step away from the abacus! If you’re using a program that doesn’t give an easy word count, contact me for a quote.
Frequent Flyer Special
For 5 credits per page, you get a Full Script Critique + your choice of Artwork Help + your choice of Voice & Grammar Help. 100 credit minimum.
TERMS & CONDITIONS (What are credits?)
I use PayPal for invoices and payments, and I require a $50 minimum initial credit.
$1 USD= 1 credit.
Credits do not expire and are transferrable! Each time you purchase a $50 or more credit, the value of those credits is locked in as detailed on your PayPal invoice.
For example, if you need only ten pages critiqued, and 1 page currently costs 2 credits, you’ll pay $50 for 50 credits and use up 20 credits on those ten pages. You’ll still have enough credits for 15 more pages to use whenever you want, because you locked in that 1 page=2 credits price. But if you buy another $50 credit a few years later, 1 page might cost 3 credits. Then you’d only get 17 pages for what you used to pay for 25. So you might want to buy more than 50 credits.
You can always give credits as gifts or hoard for a rainy day.
